Information On Skiing : Clothing For Skiers

In this installment of our learn to ski guide we look at what clothing you need.

Proper and safe skiing means being properly and safely outfitted so that you are protected from internal dampness, external humidity and, of course, cold temperatures.  Packing the right combination of ski clothing can be tricky, but you should be covered if you pack the following items for a one week ski trip:  Fleece Tops – 3; Goggles – 1; Hat – 1; Headband – 1; Ski Gloves – 1 pair; Ski Jacket – 1; Ski Pants – 1; Ski Socks – 3 pair; Sunglasses – 1 pair; Sweaters – 3; Thermal Underwear – 2 sets.

Three layers of clothing are recommended, including a base layer, an insulating layer, and a protective layer, in order to trap more air and keep you warmer than one single layer.  You’ll want an outer layer that is made of a fabric that allows air to flow through it (permitting perspiration to escape), and that is water and windproof.

Go for a jacket that is insulated with either eider-down or goose-down (the same goes for ski pants), as they provide the best protection, then under that wear a fleece, as they’re warm, light and dry quickly, and then under that wear a sweater made of wool or acrylic.

Gloves must be flexible enough to promote good handling of your ski poles, but must also be warm enough to protect your fingers and hands; and wearing a warm fleece hat that covers your ears will keep your body heat from escaping through the top of your head.

Not only must you keep your feet warm by wearing thick socks, but you will want to make sure they are stretchable so as to avoid blisters; and only wear one pair at a time to make sure you maintain good circulation in your feet, otherwise, they will be colder.  Choose underwear that are made from wool, which will keep you warmer than cotton, and make sure you select thermal underwear for extra protection from the elements.

The features you will want in a pair of sunglasses are not only that they provide 100% ultra-violet (UV) protection, but your glasses should be shatterproof and should wrap around your head and ears securely.  You can wear goggles with your sunglasses whenever you may be skiing in snow or rain.

If your budget allows you to do so, purchasing brand-name ski apparel will net you better quality and longer-lasting clothing and accessories.

The Right Shoes Will Prevent Foot Pain

Many people are troubled by foot problems for one main reason. Shoes that just don’t fit properly.

Blisters, aching joints and hard, cracked skin are all common complaints that can be alleviated by choosing footwear that fits and then wearing the right shoes for whatever activity you want to do. Well fitting shoes should support the feet and how they function hence it is important to choose shoes that fit well.

In the course of an average day we will each walk around 10,000 steps and each time the foot hits the ground it must withstand the concentrated weight of your whole body. Our feet must adapt, as we walk, to varied terrains and surfaces. The foot then tightens and becomes tense in order to propel the body forward. There are some fantastic shoes designed to withstand this repeated cycle of use. For example, walking shoes will often have very strong rigid soles that are good for even the roughest terrain.

One thing that many people overlook when buying shoes is how much their feet can swell during the day. The main cause is of course gravity. If you are in a line of work that keeps you on your feet all day you will probably be painfully aware of how much your feet can swell during the course of the day. As fluids build up your shoes can feel increasingly tight and uncomfortable. You can lessen foot swelling by putting the feet up periodically throughout the course of the day.

Obviously, if your shoes are already tight they wil only get tighter and increasingly uncomfortable as the day progresses. Shoes that are too short or too narrow will make your feet ache. It is therefore important to get your feet measured and accurately sized. This raises another point to remember when shopping for shoes: your feet are smaller in the morning so be sure to make an allowance for swelling. As a rough guide, try to allow about a fingers width of space, inside the shoes, in front of your big toes.

Many people prefer to carry out their clothes and shoe shopping online these days. Inevitably, not trying on the shoes can lead to some problems as sizes can vary between manufacturers. One way to avoid problems is to try on the shoes that you want before buying them online. This technique will not win favour with your local shoe stores but at least you can be confident your chosen shoes will fit.

A pair of shoes that fit properly should never need to be worn in. If your shoes fit properly and they are appropriate for what you are doing in them then they should feel comfortable.

Selecting the right shoes for what you want to do in them is vitally important. It would be mad to attempt a marathon in a pair of six inch stilettos. I think that simply standing in a pair of six inch stillettos is acually quite mad. But shoes like these have their place. If your work involves standing up all day then always go for comfortable, relatively flat shoes with plenty of space in front of the toe and ideally laces so that you can loosen them when your feet swell, which they inevitably will.

A form of footwear that has become ubiquitous in recent years is, of course, trainers and skate shoes. These sports shoes come in a whole host of styles, some specialized for certain activities like jogging on city streets or skateboarding. Vans shoes and DC shoes are two notable brands with an excellent reputation for robustness, comfort and long life. I’m a great lover of trainers and will probably be wearing a pair when I finally shuffle off this mortal coil. There are so many cool styles and colors available today that you shouldn’t have any trouble finding some that not only fit well but look great.

Learn To Skydive : Skydiving Clothing And Equipment

Skydiving gear is the topic for this part of our go skydiving guide.

Even basic skydiving requires the use of a range of specialist equipment and clothing. Understanding what each piece does and how it works will improve not only your confidence, but your safety too.

Your parachute is made up of several component parts, which are contained in a single pack that you wear on your back. The main canopy is housed in a unit called a D-bag and is attached via lines to a smaller pilot chute called a drogue, which is deployed first to assist the main canopy in its deployment. Alongside those is a reserve chute that can be deployed in case the main one fails. Once deployed there are hand toggles used to steer and brake.

If something goes badly wrong – say, the jumper blacks out or gets entangled – the automatic activation device will kick in. The AAD is a sophisticated palm-sized computer that measures elevation and descent rate – if a skydiver fails deploy the parachute by the appropriate height, this life-saving device will automatically cut a strap to release the chute.

An altimeter measures height above the ground and the rate of descent. This equipment is usually digital and is accurate to within a few meters. Altimeters work by sensing air pressure, which changes as the skydiver descends. They should be calibrated on the ground before the plane takes off.

Skydiving suits protect jumpers from the wind while in the air and from cuts and abrasions on landing. Suits can vary according to materials (different fabrics have different aero-dynamic qualities), tightness (tighter suits fall faster than baggy ones), and straps attachments (strap attachment systems and places vary across different types of skydiving).

A helmet is needed to guard against possible head trauma when landing. Skydivers are trained to land on their feet but there is always a slight chance that a gust of wind or a trip or other mishap could cause a jumper’s head to hit the ground. Helmets usually incorporate two-way radios for in-the-air and air-to-ground communication.

Surfing Guide : What You Need

In this installment of our how to surf guide we look at surfing gear.

A surfboard is all you really need to surf, though numerous people find surfboard wax and a wetsuit beneficial.

Usually a surfboard is 2.7 meters long and 55 to 60 cm across. They are generally made from polyurethane foam and coated with fiberglass, though there are many different types of available. It is common to have one fin under the board and an ankle bracelet that will connect you to the board.

For those just learning how to surf a wide, thick board that has a gradual oval shape to it with a rounded tip is the best way to go as it offers the best balance and buoyancy for maximum safety. Before you purchase a board for yourself, it’s advisable to rent or borrow a large variety of boards while you’re learning how to surf, to see which suits you best.

It is common for surfers to find surfboard wax helpful, though putting it on your board is not necessary. This is because the surface of a surfboard is somewhat slippery to begin with and is made even more so when it’s placed in water. Surfboard wax is generally used on the areas of the board that make contact with your feet and hands.

The need for a wetsuit is mainly determined by the region in which you are surfing and your own natural resistance to cold conditions. Being continuously exposed to water depletes your body heat more readily when your skin remains wet, even though your body is working very hard while you are surfing.

Particularly in cold waters a wetsuit will keep your warm with a thin layer of moisture between the wetsuit and your skin that remains heated by your body. Wetsuits do not interfere with your flexibility, they are extremely elastic, and they weigh very little. You can rent a wetsuit at almost any surfing location.

Rocket Dog

Rocket Dog is a fairly new company, it started in California in 1997.  Their brand was predominantly aimed at the female market with only Rocket Dog for women available, however more recently mens and childrens ranges have also been added.

As a company aimed at the younger market, they are aware of the impact of social networking websites and the potential for reaching their target demographic.  Bebo, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are all used by Rocket Dog to help them to interact with their potential customers. Another tool employed by the company is sponsoring events such as the yearly party in Coachella Valley and also at many music events in the US and other countries.

Of course they are not unique in utilising marketing tactics such as these, many other companies also do similar things.  However this combined with the detailed and exciting design that go into many of their products, it seems that they have established themselves as a potent force, particularly with the Rocket Dog women’s shoe range.  Even the company logo seems to have a buzz about it, the famous running dog, inspired by the pet of one of the founders.

The pricing strategy used seems to be comparable with similar fashion footwear companies, not high end designer prices but not budget price either. Getting the price right is obviously an important decision, you want to get as many sales as possible but you want to convey the message of a high quality product. Pitching the price mid range seems like a fairly sensible decision.  Some brands of trainers for women or sneakers are aimed with exclusivity in mind and command a high price in order to achieve this. A more balanced idea seems to be to concentrate on making the design and quality of the product become it’s uniqueness. This is one company who seem to have achieved this, as their ongoing success demonstrates.

Adidas Trainers

Adidas is one of those names that is synonomous with quality and is one people the world over instantly recognise. The company was formed in 1949 by Adolf Dassler, whose name was used to make the name Adidas.

Over the years Adidas have developed many different types of sportswear, but perhaps they are most recognised for their trainers (or sneakers if you’re from that side of the pond).  From high street fashion to technologically advanced footwear, they cover the whole range – for men, women and children as well.

One of the newest running shoes from Adidas is the Supernova Sequence, which is aimed at both men and women who are serious about their running.  They claim that it can adapt to individual running styles, providing comfort and ultimately reducing the likelihood of injury from the constant pounding of the runner’s feet on the ground.  This is pretty advanced stuff and is one of their top of the range womens Adidas training shoe, although there is also a mens version available.

Like many retailers, Adidas like to collaborate with designers to further enhance their brand. One recent such collaboration was with designer Stella McCartney – a relative newcomer to fashion, but one with a high profile.  This seems to have been quite a success, with special versions of jackets, shirts and Adidas womens trainers.

Maintaining the kudos of the brand for any retailer is obviously paramount. One way in which companies try to do this is to keep exclusivity of some of their products.  Adidas for example have a few womens trainers and men that are only available to buy from their own store.

In recent times Adidas aquired another high street name – Reebok, showing that the company is financially strong and one that is constantly looking to evolve.  I wonder if Mr. Dassler ever imagined his company would grow to be such a big name in the world of sportswear? It seems like it is here to stay for many years to come.
